One of the areas of clarity I need is this concept of Australian of the Year. I need to know what the rulebook says.
Well, I’m glad you’re asking me, and asking me today, because if you’d asked me twelve months ago, I wouldn’t have known the answer. Do you know Australia’s the only nation in the world that has a government endorsed national citizen of the year program.
Is that right?
I’ve said it a hundred times this year to all sort of different audiences, and no one’s corrected me. And we’ve had it for more than 50 years. And I’ve got to say something that I’m proud of, as an Australian, is that any one of us can get this extraordinary, humbling honour for a year.
