In terms of leadership, in Australia whether it be in politics or corporate Australia or broader community groups, are we seeing enough long term decision making, we see enough courage to say look there’s no response today but, or no outcome today, or are we locking ourselves into some short term thinking?
Well we’re actually captive to the reverse in fact, if you take politics we have ridiculous three year terms in this country and you can’t possibly do much in three years because you’re up again if you’re not popular you’re not going to be re-elected so you can’t do tough things, in the average length of CEO in Australia these days is about five years, I think that’s a bit short and I think the markets are making judgements on short term performance without picking up enough where is the strategy going over a given period of time and that’s because funds managers have pressures on them to produce results so everything is driving and driving and unfortunately in many cases it’s driving short term thinking.
For those who haven’t seen elements of you as they have today would know that socially your capacity to communicate these messages is very strong and I have a sense that CEOs these days don’t socialise the issues of their business enough, they’re not external enough and they’re not game enough to have a conversation about even acknowledging that the competitors doing well. I mean do we need to push that along a bit?
